According to Canon Rumors, the successor to the Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM lens will have a wider wide-angle end than 24mm, suggesting it may be the RF 20-70mm F2.8L IS VCM.
It is understood that this new lens will be Canon's first zoom lens to use a VCM motor. It is expected that a large number of VCM lenses will be seen throughout Canon's product line in the future. This will be an evolution in autofocus technology.
Regarding the release date of this new lens, current information points to 2026. Although the NAB Show (National Association for the Promotion of Television, New York) is coming in April, this event usually focuses on the Cinema EOS product line. Therefore, the new standard zoom lens is more likely to be officially unveiled in the second half of the year, or even after the release of new cameras such as the EOS R7 Mark II. If this lens does indeed have a wider focal length and a more advanced focusing system, it will undoubtedly become the first choice for Canon professional users upgrading their equipment.
Currently, the suggested retail price of the commercially available RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM ranges from approximately NT$64,600 to NT$69,600. If the new lens, as rumored, will increase the wide-angle angle of view and adopt a more advanced VCM focusing motor, its initial price is expected to be slightly higher than the current version. For photographers planning to purchase it, it might be advisable to observe the fluctuations in the second-hand market or wait for more definitive official information before making a decision.
