Canon eos r50 and r100 are Canon EF/EF-S mount body interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras.

From the perspective of canon's product positioning, the positioning of canon eos r50 is higher than canon eos r100, but R50 is $629 USD and R100 is $429 USD. Is the difference between them worth $200USD?

Body Appearance

• Canon EOS R100: 116.3 x 88.1 x 58.7mm, 356g

• Canon EOS R50: 116.3 x 85.5 x 68.8mm, 375g

Canon eos r100 and canon eos r50 look almost identical from the front, but there are subtle differences between the two cameras when viewed from above and from the back. Canon eos r100 and canon eos r50 both use hard plastic. They have exactly the same dimensions: Height 3.5" (8.8 cm); Width 4.6" (11.8 cm); Depth 2.7" (6.9 cm). Only the weight is slightly different. Difference between canon eos r100: 0.83 lbs canon eos r50: 0.81 lbs.

Gotta give Canon credit, they did a great job with the size and weight. It still has an excellent holding experience despite its compact size and light weight. It’s obvious that Canon positions these two cameras as novice/travel cameras. When you travel with Canon eos r100 or Canon eos r50, you basically won’t think of them as a burden. Unless you want to put a huge telephoto lens on them or a huge fixed aperture zoom lens.

Lens

Canon eos r100 and canon eos r50 are both EF and EF-S mount body cameras. As we all know, Canon has abandoned M mount lenses and replaced them with EF and EF-S mount lenses. Currently Canon doesn't have many EF-S mount lenses to choose from. The good news is that Canon's own EF-S mount lenses all have very high optical quality. The bad news is that Canon's own EF-S mount lenses are relatively expensive.

The expensive price of EF-S mount lenses may not be friendly to users who want to subsequently upgrade Canon eos r100 and canon eos r50 lenses, but if you have old RF lenses or lenses from other brands, they can be installed through adapter rings. On Canon eos r100 and canon eos r50.

Viewfinder

Both canon eos r100 and canon eos r50’s electronic viewfinder (EVF) has a 2.36 million dot resolution, which is typical and gives you a fairly sharp image. Some mirrorless cameras no longer have EVF as a standard feature, but I am happy that canon eos r100 and canon eos r50 still retain EVF. Under strong sunlight, the screen does not appear to be so reliable, and the EVF is particularly important at this time.

Stabilization

Both canon eos r100 and canon eos r50 do not have In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). canon eos r100 and canon eos r50 only have digital image stabilization. And when recording 4k videos, if stabilization is turned on, the picture will be cropped and enlarged by about 1.6 times. So if you are a user who needs In Body Image Stabilization, then these two cameras are probably not suitable for you.

Focus

• Canon EOS R100: Dual Pixel CMOS AF, 3975 points, Humans (Eyes/Face/Head/Body)

• Canon EOS R50: Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, 4503 points, Humans (Eyes/Face/Head/Body), Animals (Dogs, Cats and Birds) or Vehicles (Racing cars or Motor bikes)

You can see Canon EOS R50 vs Canon EOS R100. In the autofocus competition, Canon EOS R50 won by a wide margin. This is also true. Both cameras have Canon’s effective Dual Pixel CMOS AF systems, but the details set them apart. The EOS R100 cuts costs by using an older sensor design and AF system, while the EOS R50 has the newer Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system. This means slightly more AF points, especially noticeable in 4K video shooting with improved subject recognition and tracking.

LCD

The EOS R100 has a 3-inch screen that doesn’t tilt, which is rare in modern cameras. The screen of the EOS R100 is fixed, which means that it will be very inconvenient for selfies or shooting positions below the waist. Moreover, the screen of the EOS R100 does not support touch. You cannot use it to focus or control the menu.  On the other hand, the EOS R50 has a fully adjustable screen, making a big difference in everyday shooting scenarios.

Canon EOS R100 VS EOS R50: Conclusion

The EOS R100 may seem underwhelming at first glance. It follows Canon’s usual path of using older tech in a new, simple yet functional camera body. Its limitations include cropped 4K video and AF restrictions, along with a fixed screen instead of a vari-angle one. However, it still boasts a 24-megapixel sensor and a decent AF system, suitable for newcomers to mirrorless cameras focusing mostly on still photography.

While the EOS R50 is undoubtedly a superior, faster, and more advanced camera, it also comes with a higher price tag. If you can afford it, we recommend going for the EOS R50. However, if budget is a concern, the EOS R100 still offers plenty of features at a much lower price point.
