According to DPReview, the Canon PowerShot G7XIII, despite being nearly seven years old and lacking the autofocus and image processing capabilities of its newer models, has remained a bestseller. For its buyers, technology doesn't seem to be a primary selling point. However, in an interview with Canon executives during the CP+ trade show, we learned that the company's next compact camera may focus on technology.

Go Tokura, Executive Officer and Head of Imaging Business Operations at Canon Group, stated, "Current compact camera users are not actually our past customers. They are a completely new customer base. Therefore, our next camera will play a role in providing new technologies or new use cases. That's the new mission of the next compact camera." Hearing that Canon is developing a new compact camera, and that it may be more technologically advanced than current models, is indeed exciting news. Of course, this doesn't guarantee it will be geared towards photography enthusiasts who want a compact device to carry around. Last year, the company released the PowerShot V1, a camera that, while incorporating many of Canon's existing technologies, was better suited for video shooting than still photography.
