According to Sony Alpha Rumors, the Sony A7M5 camera, released on December 2nd, will feature a 33-megapixel partially stacked image sensor. Here's a detailed analysis:


33-megapixel Partially Stacked Sensor


Both the Nikon Z61 and Panasonic LUMIX SII use a 24-megapixel partially stacked sensor manufactured by Sony. Sony will be the first brand to release a higher-resolution version of this sensor technology. In contrast, the newly released Canon EOS R6 Mark III still uses a traditional non-stacked sensor. It is currently unclear whether Sony's new sensor shares the same architectural basis as the 24-megapixel versions used in Nikon and Panasonic models, or represents a new generation design. Existing 24-megapixel partially stacked sensors have limitations in dynamic range performance. As Photonsto Photos test data shows, the Nikon Z6III experiences a decrease in dynamic range at both base and mid-range ISO. Panasonic addressed this issue by introducing a "DR On/Off" mode in the LUMIX SII, allowing users to prioritize the high dynamic range mode (but this will reduce read speed).
