Sony has released the new IMX928 sensor, a 68-megapixel square global shutter sensor, a smaller sibling to the 105-megapixel IMX927 sensor released last fall.
While the IMX928 sensor is almost the same height as a full-frame sensor (22.5mm vs. 24mm), it is significantly narrower (22.5mm vs. 36mm). Overall, the total surface area of a full-frame sensor is approximately 70% larger than that of the IMX928. The IMX928 is designed for industrial use and therefore will not be used in this form in any cinema or Sony Alpha series cameras. However, it is certain that some elements of this technology will be incorporated into the 50-megapixel global shutter sensor in the future Sony A1111. Perhaps a higher-resolution global shutter full-frame camera will emerge in late 2027 or 2028.
